Avengers: Doomsday lands 18 December 2026. Three universes, one collision, and one man who thinks he can fix it by owning all of them.

Doom's defining trait in the comics is not malice, it is engineering. He treats a collapsing multiverse the way an engineer treats a failing bridge: identify the load, replace the structure, book the casualties as a line item.
That is what makes him worse than Thanos. Thanos wanted balance and was willing to kill for it. Doom wants a solution that works, and he has usually already built it before anyone finishes arguing.
What separates Doom from every other genius in Marvel is that he refuses to pick a lane. A peer of Reed Richards in the lab and a peer of Strange in the mystic arts, and he considers the distinction a failure of imagination in everyone else.
In the 2019 run reportedly informing Downey's take, he is tormented by visions of a perfect world he cannot reach. A man who can see the correct reality and cannot get to it will eventually try to build it out of the wrong ones.
Latveria matters. Doom is a head of state, so his crimes are foreign policy and his experiments are national projects. He does not skulk. He legislates.
In Hickman's Secret Wars he does not conquer Battleworld so much as administrate it. Gods, barons, a legal code, a church. The horror of God-Emperor Doom is not that he rules badly. It is that it functions.

A portal is open somewhere in this file, and while it stays open the sections fold back on each other. The Eye can cut a loop — it is the one thing in the building that has done this before, several thousand times, on purpose.
On Titan, Strange used the Time Stone to look ahead through fourteen million six hundred and five outcomes of the war with Thanos. Exactly one of them ended with a win. He then spent the rest of Infinity War deliberately engineering that single branch, including handing over the stone and letting half the universe die on schedule.
In Multiverse of Madness he dreamwalks, meets the Illuminati of Earth-838, watches a version of himself executed for the damage that variant caused, and is told at the end that he has triggered an incursion. Strange is the MCU character most responsible for the multiverse being cracked open, and the only one who has already been shown the bill.

Robert Reynolds is, on paper, the strongest thing in the room — a Superman-scale hero whose strength has been described as rivalling Thor or the Hulk. In Thunderbolts* he was the emotional centre rather than the muscle: an addict with a split mind who could not be trusted with what he could do.
He ends that film having beaten the darkness with help, and joins the New Avengers. The post-credits scene, set fourteen months later and directed by the Russos themselves, has him admitting he will not risk becoming the Sentry again.
The Void is not a separate villain. It is the same man. Every time Bob reaches for the power, the shadow comes with it, and in Thunderbolts* it was capable of swallowing a city.
Pullman has said his teammates will not let him out of their sight in Doomsday, because they know what happens if he is caught in the wrong hands or left unsupported. In a film about a man collecting realities, an unstable nuclear option that walks and talks is not a hero. It is an asset someone will try to acquire.

Avengers: Doomsday releases in theatres worldwide on 18 December 2026. It was originally scheduled for 1 May 2026, and Disney moved it to the December slot in May 2025 — pushing its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, to 17 December 2027 at the same time. Principal photography wrapped in September 2025 at Pinewood Studios in the UK, with additional photography carried out afterwards.

Yes — two of them. The first full trailer debuted to exhibitors at CinemaCon in April 2026 and was released publicly on 20 July 2026, timed to tickets going on sale. It shows the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men crossing paths, and delivers its headline reveal: Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
A second, longer trailer was then shown only to the Hall H audience at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, alongside a new Doom poster. That version opens on Victor seated on a throne while Sue Storm narrates his backstory — “Victor was always the smartest guy in the room” — establishing that the MCU’s Fantastic Four already know him and share a history with him. Reporting on the footage also places Doom at the head of an army of Sentinels, and gives new looks at Cyclops, Magneto and Steve Rogers.
Marvel announced the core cast during a five-hour livestream on 26 March 2025, revealing names one chair at a time, and has added to it since. This is the confirmed roster as it currently stands.
Hugh Jackman is not on the announced cast list, so Wolverine is unconfirmed. Logan and Wolverine are the same character — Logan is the name he goes by, Wolverine the codename — and the case for his return rests on Deadpool & Wolverine, which folded the Fox library into the MCU and ended with this version of him choosing to stay. Treat it as speculation until Marvel says otherwise.
The confirmed mutants are Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Beast and Gambit.
Marvel’s official synopsis is deliberately short: heroes from three distinct universes are set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they have encountered. The three universes are generally read as the main MCU, the Fantastic Four’s reality from First Steps, and the Fox X-Men timeline.
The mechanic underneath that is the comic-book idea of an incursion: two realities drift close enough together that one must be destroyed for the other to survive. It is not a villain, it is physics with a deadline — and it is the engine of Jonathan Hickman’s New Avengers and Secret Wars runs, which Marvel has pointed to as source material. Doom’s answer in those books is to stop trying to save the branches separately and instead weld the survivors into one patchwork world under a single ruler.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened days before Comic-Con 2026 and broke a preview-night box office record, and its post-credits scene sends Peter Parker into space — widely read as a direct hand-off into Doomsday.
Yes. Doomsday is the fifth Avengers film. It was originally announced in 2022 as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and retitled at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, after Marvel parted ways with Jonathan Majors and moved the saga’s focus from Kang to Doctor Doom.
Marvel has not explained it in-story. The dominant fan theory is that Doom is a multiversal variant connected to Tony Stark, which would make the resemblance a plot point rather than a casting quirk. Nothing about that has been confirmed — treat it as speculation until December.
Not as Tony Stark. Downey returns in the same December tentpole playing a different character entirely. Tony died at the end of Endgame and Marvel has not undone that.
Ryan Reynolds is not on the announced cast list, though his appearance at Comic-Con 2026 kept the rumours alive. Unconfirmed either way.
Helpful, not required. X2 and Days of Future Past are the most useful for reacquainting yourself with Xavier, Magneto and Mystique, since these are the same actors rather than recasts.
Marvel has not published a runtime. Expect it closer to release.
It opens exclusively in theatres on 18 December 2026. Marvel titles typically reach Disney+ a few months after their theatrical run, but no streaming date has been announced.
